Almeida Concordância

The 1911 Almeida with updated vocabulary and old forms, in the classic, familiar style. The whole Bible, still under review.

Under review

Starting text

The edition starts only from the Almeida, Revista e Corrigida edition (1900/1911), in the public domain, already with updated spelling (the A1911C edition, also ours). No other Bible text is used as a starting point.

Where the text comes from: Project Gutenberg no. 62383

What changed

  • Old words and forms get today's form, by rules: “mui” → “muito”, “aborrecer” → “odiar”, “concerto” → “aliança”, “banda” → “lado”, “ajuntar” → “juntar”, “porquanto” → “porque”.
  • Verbs and pronouns: “buscar-me-heis” → “me buscareis”, “ordenara” → “tinha ordenado”, “que diz-lhes” → “que lhes diz”, “havendo dito” → “tendo dito”.
  • Spelling leftovers in the A1911C (“logar” → “lugar”, “azas” → “asas”) and punctuation (a colon in the middle of a sentence becomes a semicolon).

What did not change

  • The classic Almeida style: the rhythm of the sentences, the “vós” form of address and the solemn way of speaking stay.
  • Familiar words such as “bem-aventurado”, “porventura”, “ímpio”, “Senhor” and the “vós” form of address were kept on purpose.
  • The structure: same verses, same numbering, no empty verse.

How it was made

Base: the Almeida, Revised and Corrected Edition (1900/1911), in the public domain, already with updated spelling (A1911C). On top of it, 121 general rules and 121 hand-made exceptions, each with its reason noted.

7,808 of 31,102 verses change beyond punctuation (25.1%). The rest stay as in A1911C.

Words that stay, and why

These words were reviewed and kept on purpose (occurrences in the text):

  • varão322 timesA well-known biblical word still understood; replacing it with “homem” would lose the tone of the text.
  • mancebo152 timesStill recognized and common in Portuguese Bibles; part of the classic tone.
  • cingir29 timesA consecrated biblical image (girding the loins); no simple replacement keeps the image.
  • lombos63 timesA consecrated biblical image; “waist” or “hips” would change the meaning.
  • cerviz19 timesA consecrated expression (“stiff neck”), understood from context.
  • porventura487 timesStill current; it gives the tone of a question that expects an answer.
  • manjar164 timesStill used for a delicacy; the context makes it clear.
  • apascentar32 timesThe image of the shepherd and the flock, central in the Bible.
  • moço184 timesA word that is still alive and harmless.
  • opróbrio57 timesA consecrated word, understood from context (shame, humiliation).
  • enfermidade51 timesStill current, with the right meaning.
  • prostrar-se34 timesA gesture of worship, a word still understood.
  • aposento7 timesStill used for a room of the house.
  • tornar (voltar)369 timesNot replaced across the board: “tornar-se” (become) and “tornar a fazer” (do again) make sense today, and “voltar” (return) needs verse-by-verse reading.
  • refrigera2 timesKept by the team's choice: the verb “refrigera” of Psalm 23.3 stays, a very familiar form.
  • assentar-se, assentado231 timesKept by the team's choice: “assentar-se” and “assentado” are familiar forms still in use.
  • parir (animais e sentido figurado)12 timesFor women it was replaced by “dar à luz” (give birth); it stays for animals and figurative or poetic language (Isa 66.7-9, Gal 4.27).
  • vós, tendes, credes3,565 timesThe “vós” form of address (tendes, credes, sois) belongs to the edition's classic style and stays.
  • unicórnio9 timesA word from the Almeida tradition, well known; it stays.
  • bem-aventurado102 timesA familiar biblical word from the Beatitudes; it stays.

Copy check

An automatic test compares every verse with copies of other protected translations, kept only for checking and never published. Every match needs an explanation: a general rule, a common dictionary word or an exception of ours. Limits: at most 5% of verses with a vocabulary match per translation and 50% per rule. Result today, with no unexplained match:

  • ACF: 393 verses with a vocabulary match out of 31,119 compared
  • ALMEIDA LIVRE: 43 verses with a vocabulary match out of 31,098 compared

How it was made

A program reads the A1911C and applies, in order, a list of rules (spelling, vocabulary, verb forms and pronouns, punctuation). Where a rule alone would leave a sentence awkward, a manual review fixes only that passage and records the reason. Every difference comes from a rule or a recorded exception, and an automatic test checks this. Another test compares the result with a sample of copyrighted texts and demands an explanation for any coincidence. The full record is in docs/almeida-concordancia.md.

Clean room

Every change comes from a documented rule. No copyrighted Bible (ARC, ARA, ACF, NAA, NVI…) was consulted.
