Almeida 1911, updated spelling
The 1911 Almeida Bible written the way Portuguese is written today. Only the spelling changed.
Starting text
The starting point is the Bible of João Ferreira de Almeida, Revista e Corrigida edition (1st ed. 1900, Lisbon, 1911), already in the public domain. We use the Project Gutenberg transcription (no. 62383), made by volunteers and proofread by Distributed Proofreaders. The original 1911 Almeida stays in the app as it is.
Where the text comes from: Project Gutenberg no. 62383
What changed
- The spelling was put in the current Brazilian standard (1990 Orthographic Agreement): “elle” and “elles” became “ele” and “eles”, “tambem” became “também”, “pae” became “pai”.
- Proper names follow the current Brazilian spelling: “David” became “Davi”, “Moysés” became “Moisés”.
- The section titles also follow the current spelling.
What did not change
- No word was replaced by another: the same terms, in the same order.
- The punctuation and the structure of the verses are those of the 1911 Almeida.
- Archaisms remain (“mui”, “porquanto”, “aborrecer”): whoever wants updated vocabulary can read the Almeida Concordância.

How it was made
A program applies a list of rules and a dictionary of exceptions, always with the same result. An artificial intelligence only suggested and checked the spelling of isolated words, with the instruction to update only the orthography; nothing entered the text without going through the dictionary and a review. The full method, the rules and the leftovers are recorded in docs/a1911-ortografia.md.
Clean room
No copyrighted Bible (ARC, ARA, ACF, NAA, NVI…) was used as a reference.
